      Mexican Independence Day 2026

Let’s celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day festivities together in 2026! Puerto Morelos and Leona Vicario will be filled with pride, tradition, and celebration as we commemorate Mexican Independence.

Leona Vicario – September 15,  7:30 PM, Main Park

Puerto Morelos – September 15, 8:30 PM, Municipal Palace Parking Lot on Zetina Gasca in the colonia

Join us for a great night of Mexican celebration!

Why does Mexico celebrate Independence Day on September 16? In the early hours of September 16, 1810, Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla issued the famous Grito de Dolores, calling on the people to rise up against Spanish rule. His call helped ignite the Mexican War of Independence, a struggle that would last more than a decade before Mexico finally achieved independence in 1821.

Today, the tradition continues each September 15, when communities across Mexico gather for El Grito, followed by celebrations leading into Independence Day on September 16. There are typically food and craft vendors, rides, folkloric dancing, live music and so much more. If you’ll be in town, I definitely recommend that you come and experience Mexican Independence Day festivities in Puerto Morelos.

SAVE THE DATE – DÍA DE MUERTOS

The Puerto Morelos Institute of Arts and Culture has given us a heads up about important dates for Day of the Dead so that you can start planning your trip!

      1. On October 24th, there will be a number of contests – last year this included altars, decorated doorways, Catrinas, alebrijes, and probably a couple more things I’m forgetting at the moment.
      2. On November 1 & 2 there will be lots happening around town. All we know so far is that there will be a contest winners will be announced, decorated boats will parade along the coast, and there will be a concert near the square portside.

Stay tuned for more details as we receive them. You don’t want to miss it! Until then, click here to see video of last year’s events!

La Sirena will be hosting the breathtaking Entre Dos Mundos show again this year on October 31st and November 1st. It was absolutely amazing, so be sure to snap up your tickets ASAP as it WILL sell out. See all the details above near the top of the page.
